With a little zoom blur added to the OOF area, it helps create the sense of movement. Vignettes now can be high or low key, and can be independent of the focus region. For example, consider this image: Figure 8. The before and after shots:. Log in now.❿

The opening screen features three tabs, one to select the Settings to apply, one to adjust Bokeh and the last to add and control a vignette. The Settings tab lets you create and manage the program options. It is divided into two sections, one for factory settings and one for settings that you save of your own.
Each category has multiple sub-categories. None of the factory settings alter the focus or vignette region controls.
This allows you to adjust the region controls for your image and then apply different effects without changing the regions. The Bokeh tab contains the controls you use to add and adjust the blur in the image. Here you choose what type of region to use for the blur radial, full-planar or half-planar and you adjust its position, rate of falloff and strength. A Show Mask button allows you to see exactly where the effect is being applied, but it would be nice if the mask would display at less than percent opacity so that you could see the image through it.
Other sliders give you control over highlight brightness and grain matching. The Vignette tab has options for matching the vignette to the blur region, creating a custom region or applying a traditional edge vignette. The vignettes act on tones in the image, rather than simply overlaying gray or white. This is the best way, but it tends to build up saturation when the vignette is very dark, so there is a Bleach slider to desaturate the colors if needed.
Despite all of the added capabilities and enhancements in Bokeh 2, I find it most useful when I select, or mask a foreground subject first, and then use the program to throw the background out of focus. They do a beautiful job of softening the background.
But for me, Bokeh still lacks some features that I need and that other focus software incorporates. There is still no capability to brush on or erase focus add to or hold back the focus mask. Nor can you export the focus mask as an alpha channel so that you can adjust it later in Photoshop. If you are investing the time to use focus software for any purpose other than throwing the background completely out of focus, the ability to control the focus mask is essential.
A free day trial version of Bokeh 2 is available at www. There are also a number of excellent tutorials to get you quickly up to speed with the program. His latest book, Professional Filter Techniques for Digital Photographers, covering both on-camera analog and post-production digital filters is published by Amherst Media.
June 15, Major Capture One 22 updates announced on June 14 include a Magic Eraser tool for refining masks and an upcoming iPad launch. Here was a case where all I was able to bring with me was my little LX3 compact camera. We had gotten seats at field level which provided a pretty cool photo opportunity. The before and after shots:.
The “before” shot straight out of the camera. After using the planar blur tool, it helped focus on the subjects in the foreground.
Another fun post processing technique that can add a quick dose of movement in a static image, is motion blur. Bokeh 2 allows you to instantly alter the look of the out of focus areas in your image by way of the Motion Settings. You can apply a spin, spiral or zoom effect in varying intensities for fun effect. In this example, I carefully selected the train took about a minute in Photoshop as it was important to me to keep it sharp which helped draw my eye directly to what was sharp in contrast to its out of focus surroundings.
In this before shot, there is no movement and the image is kind of stagnant. With a little zoom blur added to the OOF area, it helps create the sense of movement.
By centering the planar tool and adjusting the feathering, you can gain an instant mini effect without having to select anything. This is all fine and dandy, but who really benefits from this type of a plugin? Well, I can only speak for myself, but I have a feeling, my needs and desires with a piece of software like this may be similar to others out there.
For me, Bokeh 2 will change the way I shoot certain subjects. I no longer have to decide between either shooting environmental portraits especially group portraits wide or close to wide open, with an ND filter on my lens, sacrificing sharpness via an overly pronounced, shallow depth of field, to gain a more pleasing out of focus background, or keeping the subject s sharp and losing the out of focus background.
This alone is huge for me. Also, I can now feel better when I have to leave my big camera and large, heavy lenses behind in lieu of a compact point and shoot, knowing that if I want, I can still achieve a nice, soft defocused background, or the look of a shallow depth of field later. In many cases can anyone say weddings? As much as I may wish, I am in no way affiliated with Alien Skin Software aside from contacting them and having my reviews used on their website.
Thanks guys! Like Like. It is very worth a try, especially seeing that they have the free 30 day trial. In fact I would suggest trying the free trial out before deciding.
